What the US tariffs mean for your cat food and litter

UPDATE 13 March 2025

If you currently buy US made cat food and litter

As of now, the retaliatory tariffs introduced by the Canadian government do not apply to US made food and litter coming into the country - that may change in the future as pet food is on the list for a further round of retaliatory tariffs should they be implemented.

However, the local distributors we purchase from who import these products have been struggling for some time already due to the weak Canadian dollar and have preexisting scheduled price increases coming up soon as they can no longer absorb those costs.

Unfortunately, neither can we, so while we will put it off for as long as possible, prices on some US brands will be going up in the near future. We will do our absolute best to find you and your cats alternatives if you would like to seek out other options, just ask!

Looking to switch to Canadian companies (or just not US) ?

Let’s break it down by product type as it depends on what is available to us and what is manufactured in Canada.

Dry food

There are lots of great high quality options available that are Canadian! We feel confident that we offer a strong US alternative in this area.

There are much less non-US options in this area however we have a couple of great options and are working to source more.

Ziwi Peak (made in New Zealand)

Frozen Raw

Wet Food

The most impacted product will be wet food – unfortunately there are just fewer options available that are made in Canada when it comes to alternative proteins and textures that we know are so important for finicky cats. We are working hard to try and source alternatives to those where we can – but ultimately there will be some specific foods that a Canadian alternative for will be impossible.

Other products we sell that the retaliatory tariffs affect

Travel Cat: There will be a retaliatory tariff applied to bags, including backpacks and carriers. This will affect the pricing of Travel Cat products we sell as well as other US carriers.

Greeting Cards + other gift items: Going forward we will be avoiding US products in favour of Canadian-made. We already carry a lot of great Canadian brands like Danica, Stay Home Club, Lovestruck Prints, Badger & Burke etc.

Furniture: We have great Canadian owned and made products already and will be looking for more. Some US products we stock we expect the prices to go up in the near future, such as SmartCat, Trixie and K&H Products.

Future impacts

Increased costs in manufacturing, in particular aluminum. The US imports lots of aluminum from Canada and the tariffs that are still going ahead will most likely make canning even more expensive. If Canadian manufacturers import raw ingredients from US we could see Canadian made products prices increase.

Potentially more retaliatory tariffs that add extra costs onto US goods coming into Canada - we will be watching closely and doing our utmost best to mitigate costs and provide you with alternatives where possible.
